Household waste management in rural areas remains an environmental health problem because most residents did not sort their waste and still burned it in their yards. This community service programme aimed to improve the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of residents of Pattalikang Village, Manuju District, regarding household waste processing. The programme was carried out from August to September 2026 using a one-group pre-test and post-test design. The population and the sample were the same 43 residents, selected by total sampling. The team delivered participatory education, hands-on training in waste sorting and composting, and four weeks of mentoring. Data were collected through knowledge and attitude questionnaires and a practice observation sheet, and were analysed using the paired t-test and normalised gain. The mean knowledge score rose from 56.4 to 86.7 (p < 0.001; normalised gain 0.69), and the mean attitude score rose from 68.2 to 82.5 (p < 0.001). The number of residents who sorted waste at home increased from 9 to 31, the number who made compost increased from 0 to 24, and the number who still burned waste decreased from 31 to 12. Participatory education combined with direct practice and mentoring is effective in improving residents’ knowledge, attitudes, and waste management practices.
